Thank you for contacting me regarding H.R. 3261, the Stop Online Piracy Act. I appreciate hearing from you on this important matter.
As you know, H.R. 3261, similar to the PROTECT IP Act currently pending in the Senate, aims to prevent online threats to economic creativity and theft of intellectual property. This legislation authorizes the Attorney General to issue a temporary restraining order or injunction against internet sites that illegally display copyrighted material. In addition, this bill would make it a felony for an individual to illegally stream copyrighted material. This bill has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary for further review. While I do not sit on this specific committee, I will certainly keep your views in mind should this legislation come for consideration before the full House of Representatives.
Again, thank you for your correspondence. I am most appreciative. As your representative in Congress, I will continue to prioritize policies that create jobs, grow our economy, and protect the middle class while responsibly reducing the federal deficit. Should you have additional comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. My door is always open.
