Thank you for contacting me to express your opinion regarding H.R. 2306, the Marijuana Prohibition Act. As your Congressman, I appreciate hearing your thoughts and welcome every opportunity to be of service.
As you may know, H.R. 2306 was introduced by Representative Barney Frank (D-CO) on June 23, 2011, and was subsequently referred to the House Committees on Energy and Commerce and the Judiciary where it is currently awaiting further action. If enacted, it would limit the application of federal laws to the distribution and consumption of marijuana.
Although I tend to agree that some illegal drugs are more dangerous and addictive than others, we must enforce all of our drug laws. I remain opposed to the legalization of marijuana, and I am concerned that legalization will result in increased abuse of all varieties of drugs. As a physician for nearly 30 years, I understand, first hand, the destructive nature of drug abuse and the damage it inflicts on its victims. I believe we must do everything to prevent the abuse of marijuana and other illegal drugs. As a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, please be assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind should H.R. 2306 come before the full Committee for a vote.
Again, thank you for sharing your concerns. If you feel that I may be of additional assistance on this, or any other matter of importance to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.
