Thank you for contacting me regarding the use and legalization of medical marijuana. I appreciate the time and effort that you took to share your concerns with me on this public policy question. I value your input and welcome all comments so I can stay informed on the issues most important to the citizens of Missouri's 4th Congressional District.
Marijuana is currently classified as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. This prohibits the possession, usage, purchase, sale, or cultivation of marijuana. This law, along with several Supreme Court rulings, has granted the federal government the right to enforce drug laws and prosecute people for the cultivation and distribution of illicit drugs. Drugs such as marijuana create crime, cripple communities, and strain family relationships. Laws such as the Controlled Substances Act stand to protect communities against the pain caused by drugs.
In recent years, some states have gone against federal law and allowed the cultivation, sale, and use of marijuana for medical purposes. As you know, there are several pieces of legislation that have been proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives regarding medical marijuana. These bills, if passed, would protect people who follow state drug laws from federal prosecution. While none of these bills have reached the House floor for a vote, I will certainly keep your thoughts in mind should they come before the full House.
Again, thank you for sharing your concerns on this very important matter. Please do not hesitate to contact me on issues of importance to you.
With best regards, I remain,
Very truly yours,
Vicky Hartzler
