Thank you for contacting me in opposition to the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act (PROTECT IP). I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.
As you know, the PROTECT IP Act would make it easier for the U.S. Justice Department to target and seize control of websites that traffic in pirated intellectual property. It would also provide a narrower definition of a rogue website that sells copyright-infringing or counterfeit products including consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, and movie and music releases.
While it is important to protect copyright owners and to have effective intellectual property enforcement, I believe it is also important to provide for fair use of material over the Internet. Rest assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind as the Senate considers this legislation.
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this important issue. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future about other issues important to you.
