Mark Udall on S.978

.
Thank you for contacting me about new legislation regarding the protection of intellectual property on the Internet (S.978). I appreciate that you took the time to express your views.

As you may know, this legislation would criminalize the online streaming of copyrighted content. I understand the importance of putting a stop to illegal activity on the Internet, and the significant economic damage caused by the theft of intellectual property. However, I also believe in the power of the Internet as an open, innovative space for all Americans. Whether used for commerce or for entertainment, the Internet has provided an avenue for businesses to flourish through instant contact with customers across the globe. We need to find the right balance between protecting intellectual property and promoting the open nature of the Internet.

The Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on S.978 on June 22, 2011. While I am not a member of that panel, rest assured I will keep your thoughts in mind if this bill comes to a vote on the Senate floor.

I will continue to listen closely to what you and other Coloradans have to say about matters before Congress, the concerns of our communities, and the issues facing Colorado and the nation. My job is not about merely supporting or opposing legislation; it is also about bridging the divide that has paralyzed our nation's politics.
